Franciscan Alliance hospitals in Crown Point and Michigan City receive Commission on Cancer Outstanding Achievement Awards

Franciscan St. Anthony Health – Crown Point and Franciscan St. Anthony Health –  Michigan City are among programs nationwide to receive American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer Outstanding Achievement awards for 2012.

Established in 2004, the award is designed to recognize cancer programs that strive for excellence in quality patient care. A facility first undergoes an on-site evaluation by a physician surveyor, during which it must demonstrate a commendation level of compliance with basic standards that represent the scope of the cancer program, as well as with 29 additional standards. Standards that form the basis of the award criteria are based on:

  • Cancer committee leadership.
  • Cancer data management.
  • Clinical management.
  • Research.
  • Community outreach.
  • Quality improvement.

Award recipients represent community-based facilities; teaching hospitals, NCI-designated Comprehensive Cancer Centers, VA hospitals, and Network Cancer programs, as well as newly accredited programs and those that are currently accredited by the Commission on Cancer.

David Ruskowski, Franciscan St. Anthony Health – Crown Point president, expressed pride in his hospital’s cancer team for achieving the honor.

“Our physicians and staff are second to none and we also offer the latest technologies in our Burrell Cancer Center for treating patients who have had a cancer diagnosis. We are very pleased that the American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer has recognized our diligent efforts to be the best in the delivery of comprehensive, high-tech, compassionate care for our patients.“

Dr. James Callaghan, Franciscan St. Anthony Health – Michigan City president, likewise was happy with his hospital’s honor.

“Franciscan St. Anthony Health – Michigan City is very pleased to have been named one of the few winners in the state of this award for high-quality cancer care. This is testament to the expert and compassionate cancer care that we provide, close to home. We are fortunate to be able to provide this care in our new, state-of-the-art Woodland Cancer Care Center, featuring the latest diagnostic and treatment technologies. In this way, we are living our mission of Continuing Christ’s Ministry in Our Franciscan Tradition.”
